The Wills family and tobacco

Bristol was the largest centre for tobacco products in Britain for a century before 1980. The Wills family pioneered the manufacture and branding of machine-made cigarettes in the 1880s and their Woodbine brand became the best-selling British cigarette. They introduced machine-made cigars, Wills’s Whiffs, in the 1930s, as well as a hand-made range. Tobacco production in Bristol came to an end in 2009.
