These handwritten and illustrated pages come from a gradual, an abbreviated version of the mass that contained the tunes but not the prayers and ritual. It was probably used at St Augustine's Abbey in Bristol. It was made large enough for a group of singers to share one book. Symbols called "neumes" show the pitch and phrasing differently from modern music.
