The F.2 was Frank Barnwell's first major success, becoming a firm favourite with British pilots during the latter half of World War I. It was renowned for its strength, reliability, speed and versatility. As an indication of its success, over 5000 were built in total, and the last to be withdrawn from service was in 1938.
