The concrete barge alongside the Matthew was built as one of two barges for a crane that built the gas dock at Avonmouth, later used for storing grain. Purchased by Bristol Sea Scouts in 1952. They built their hut on it, made out of what was formerly a local fire station, near Cumberland Basin. The barge was renamed by them as the Training Ship Matthew. It was moored near Castle Park. In 2005 the hut was sold for scrap. The other barge of the pair is still moored by Castle Park, and is being used as a floating garden. This story was told to me by an ex Bristol Sea Scout. JMG
