John Whitson was one of Bristol’s most successful merchants in the 1600s. He liked to buy expensive clothes to show off his wealth. Although some of his best clothes would have been London-made, he would have acquired others locally. Bristol had a thriving clothing trade, regulated by a guild system to ensure that craftspeople had reached a high standard through long apprenticeship before they could set up in business on their own.
