12 Denmark Street (near the Hippodrome) has been associated with the sherry business since 1796. William Perry used the cellars to trade as a wine merchant. Cellar workers used to push large oak barrels along the underground tunnels from the boats arriving from Spain to the cellars of12 Denmark St.
The Harvey family joined the business in the early 1800's. John and Edward Harvey developed a new cream sherry, the infamous Harvey's Bristol Cream which became world renowned.
Today, the Harvey's Brand is owned by the American company, Beam Suntory which specialises in the importing, blending and exporting of fortified wine.
In 2012, number 12 Denmark St re-opened as a sherry, wine and cocktail lounge called Harvey Cellars and some sherry related memorabilia is on show.
