Physician who was horrified at the insanitary hovels of Bristol's poorer districts and fought hard for improved health measures, he suceeded in changing public opinion, and as Director of Bristol Waterworks Company, helped to introduce purer water to the city. When the 1866 cholera epidemic reached Bristol, death statistics showed that he had largely won the fight for improved health.
