The baby gas ask next to the Anderson shelter was " spotted by a visitor prompting him to comment : " I know someone who was in one of them - me ! my mother told me " ! he also reported that he had come to Bristol to see his newly born one-day-old grandchild placing his own wartime experience into context . Looking at the gas mask I often wondered who it was more distressing for : the baby inside or the mother attending to the child .
In the 'Places' gallery we do quite regularly encounter visitors who have had a direct experience of bomb shelters or gas protection equipment and may show different responses to re-visiting this experience. they always speak with aucenticity and as a visitor assistant I am called to be sensitive to them.
