Bristol Museum and art gallery was built in the early 20th century funded by the Wills family.
The names carved around the upper walls of the Front Hall are of famous artists. Not all of these artists have ever been part of the museums collection but represent the high aspiration of the builders of the museum.
-One lady described being outside the museum just after it was hit by an incendiary bomb during the 2nd World War. " I was standing accross the street and I could see the men puling the taxidermied animals out of the museum to save them from the blaze. At one point they pulled a full sized giraffe still smoking form the heat and I started crying because i thought it was a giant toy." I feel that this is an excellent example of how a young child can conceptualize the horrors of war. -JS
